About the Project
The purpose of the group project was to prototype a complete service for stakeholders of our choosing. For our project, we designed an after school sustainability program for young families.
Service Summary
Through field trips, creative projects, games and interactive experiences, children will learn about sustainable methods and methods and how to implement them into their families and broader community.
Hunt Statement
How could we design a service to efficiently incorporate sustainable practices into the lifestyles of young families without burdening them with more responsibility during a busy phase of life?

Teaching young families creative ways to practice sustainability
Project Brief
Designing for sustainability requires systemic change on micro, meso, and macro levels. To create a sustainable future, there is a need to pass on knowledge of sustainable practices starting with the individual, that will ripple across families and communities. Young families are in a turbulent phase of life as they are amidst constant change and fluctuations, that unintentionally cause collateral environmental harm through their busy lifestyles. Creating a service to teach young children through creative activities will lower the burden of implementing sustainability for parents, and spark deeper curiosity in the youngest generation who has the power to make change to foster a more holistic, healthy environment.

Research
Our team spent several weeks conducting research to fully understand our topic space and audience.
Our secondary research included reading white papers, reviewing articles, examining websites of existing sustainability programs, watching video blogs of zero waste families
Primary research included intercept interviews with young families at Science World, formal interviews with parents and families, and field observation at community centers, donation facilities, sustainable parenting stores, and children’s toy stores.
Key Insights
Collectively, our team discovered four key insights that would lead us to our final service idea.
Many products required for childcare are difficult to resource in a sustainable manner, hindering access to sustainable practices.
It is difficult to encourage purchasing sustainable options when there is a lack of knowledge surrounding sustainable practices and how to implement them.
When providing resources for their children, new families prioritize convenience over sustainability as sustainable options often have steep barriers of entry.
Parents find it difficult to locate and learn knowledge on sustainable options and practices.

Final Prototype
Our final service was to educate children through a sustainable after school program. Through field trips, creative projects, games, and interactive experiences, children will learn sustainable methods and build values that will continuously serve their family’s lifestyle and community.
By creating an after school program to educate the younger generation about the environment and sustainability, we can generate a call to action and change environmentally harmful behaviors to those which are sustainable, thoughtful and holistic.
